We call a week day wobble a time when your child doesn’t want to come into nursery and would much rather stay home with you. It is when they find separating from you quite difficult, which can be upsetting and overwhelming for both of you. Generally, once in nursery, they become settled and have lots of fun with their friends

• Developmental leaps- As children grow, their awareness deepens. A toddler who was previously unfazed might suddenly realise “Oh… this means being away from my family,” and that can spark hesitation.
• Changes in routine- Even small disruptions — a different drop‑off time, a new staff member, a holiday break — can throw them off balance.
• Separation anxiety phases -These come and go. A child can be confident for months and then hit a new wave of clinginess. It’s a normal part of emotional development.
• Feeling tired or overwhelmed- Nursery is stimulating. If they’re not sleeping well, teething, or going through a growth spurt, their tolerance for separation dips.
• Social dynamics- Maybe a friend wasn’t there one day, or a small conflict happened. Children don’t always have the language to explain it, so it shows up as “I don’t want to go.”
• Testing boundaries- As they grow, they experiment with expressing preferences and seeing how adults respond. “I don’t want to go” can be part of that exploration.

• Predictable, calm drop‑off routines- A short, consistent goodbye ritual can make a big difference.
• Name the feeling- understanding the feelings they are showing helps them feel understood. We focus on understanding what your child might be thinking or feeling, not just what they’re doing. We try to ‘tune in’ to their emotions and respond in a way that supports them.
• Reassurance without over‑comforting- Warm, confident energy from you signals “You’re safe, and you can do this.”
• Keep drop‑offs brief- Lingering can unintentionally make the wobble bigger.
